Keeping your Dog Healthy: Home Dental Care

One important aspect of keeping your dog healthy is consistently brushing her teeth at home. The American Veterinary Dental College recommends that pet owners brush their dog’s teeth daily. To a novice, this activity may seem daunting, but with a little bit of practice and lots of positive reinforcement, your dog will learn to expect and enjoy this attention. Below is a video demonstrating how best to brush your dog’s teeth at home. You will notice that we have opted to use a small toothbrush and specially formulated toothpaste for this demonstration. As you acclimate your dog to this activity, you might consider using a cotton-tipped applicator, child-sized toothbrush, or finger brush. Your family veterinarian will have a good recommendation for the best “brush” to use based on the size of your dog’s mouth!
